Our own Lauren May, Vice President, recently appeared on the EdChoice Chats podcast for an engaging conversation about the power of parent support in driving student success. Lauren was joined by Colleen Hroncich, a policy analyst at the Cato Institute’s Center for Educational Freedom, and Kimberlee Tucker, owner of the Homeschool Hive, for a thoughtful and energized discussion.
The conversation explored best practices for supporting parents and home education students, highlighting Lauren’s encouragement to families who are considering homeschooling but may feel unsure about taking that first step. Lauren shared:
“I encourage anyone who’s thinking, ‘Maybe my child could do it, but I don’t know—I’m a little nervous,’ to reach out. Start talking. Start asking questions. It could truly change your life and your student’s future. Every child has the chance to change the world, and when they have the right educational setting, you’re putting them on the right path. It’s amazing.”

Opportunity shouldn’t depend on an address
By Lauren May, Vice President, Step Up, Step Further
In a state as diverse and dynamic as Florida, opportunity should never depend on an address. Where a child grows up should not determine how far they can go. And yet, for too many Florida students, it still does.
This isn’t just an education issue; it’s a workforce issue. Florida’s economy depends on a steady pipeline of skilled, creative, and adaptable workers. If today’s students don’t have access to the learning opportunities that build those skills, tomorrow’s businesses will feel the consequences.
Across our state, an address can quietly shape access to music lessons or tutoring, to technology or specialized support, to the kinds of learning experiences that spark curiosity and build confidence. Florida has no shortage of talent. What we lack is equal access to the tools that help that talent grow.
That gap is why the Step Up, Step Further Scholarship Fund exists.
The scholarship is designed to expand educational opportunity for students across Florida, regardless of where they live or the challenges their families face. It supports students in public and private schools, with a strong focus on helping public school students access additional resources that schools alone often cannot provide. For many families, it means opening doors that were previously closed, not because of a lack of ability, but because of cost.
I think about students like Maria.
Maria loves music. She listens closely when the school band practices, imagining herself on stage, flute in hand. But instruments, lessons, and practice time come with a price tag her family can’t manage after covering rent, groceries, and gas. Research shows that students who participate in music education develop stronger academic skills, greater discipline, and the perseverance employers consistently say they value. With access to scholarship support, Maria could explore that passion and build skills that translate far beyond the stage.
Then there’s Joey.
Joey is bright and curious, but math has never come easily. In a crowded classroom, it’s hard to get the one-on-one support he needs to build confidence and keep up. Research summarized by the Afterschool Alliance shows that high-quality after-school tutoring, especially in math, leads to stronger academic performance while boosting confidence and engagement. That kind of support doesn’t just help Joey pass his next test; it helps prepare him for a future where problem-solving and quantitative skills are essential across nearly every industry.
And then there’s Madison.
Madison dreams in color and code, of animating stories, building video games, and turning imagination into something interactive and alive. Access to high-quality afterschool STEM programs helps students develop the technical and creative skills that are increasingly driving Florida’s fastest-growing sectors, from technology and entertainment to engineering and advanced manufacturing. Yet cost and access keep too many students on the sidelines. With scholarship support, Madison could start building those skills now and begin preparing for jobs that Florida’s economy is counting on.
These students are not exceptions. They are everywhere in Florida.
They live in urban neighborhoods and rural towns. They attend public schools where teachers work tirelessly, even as resources are stretched thin. Their families are doing everything they can, and still, gaps remain. The Step Up, Step Further Scholarship Fund exists to help fill those gaps in practical, student-centered ways.
This scholarship is not about replacing public education. It is about strengthening it and strengthening Florida’s workforce in the process. It recognizes that learning doesn’t end when the school bell rings, and that students succeed when their individual needs are met, whether through tutoring, technology, educational tools, or enrichment opportunities that build real-world skills.
For Florida’s business community, the message is simple: workforce readiness starts early. Students who gain confidence through after-school enrichment, discipline through music, or technical skills through STEM learning are far more likely to become the engaged, capable workforce our state needs.
At its core, Step Up, Step Further is about dignity.
It tells families, We see you. It tells students, Your dreams matter. And it affirms a reality Florida’s economy depends on: opportunity should not be limited to those who can afford it.
When we invest in Florida’s students, we invest in Florida’s future workforce, communities, and competitiveness. That is the ripple effect of opportunity.
And it is something worth stepping up for. Together.

Expanding opportunity for Florida students through federal scholarship tax credits
When Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Wednesday that Florida will take part in the new Education Freedom Tax Credit Program, it opened the door to providing families with even more options for their children’s K-12 education.
Step Up For Students will be waiting on the other side to assist families, just as it has for nearly 25 years, administering Florida’s education choice scholarship programs.
The federal program, which will begin in 2027, allows individual taxpayers to contribute to approved scholarship-granting organizations, enabling students from a wide range of backgrounds to pursue learning environments and educational resources that best fit their needs.
Step Up, the nation’s largest education choice scholarship funding organization, currently serves more than 528,000 students receiving state education choice scholarships. Under the new federal law, it will participate by establishing the Step Up, Step Further Scholarship Fund, a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
The federal tax credit creates additional funding streams that build upon the choice options Florida already offers, helping students thrive regardless of ZIP code. Students in public and private schools will benefit from resources supporting tuition, tutoring, educational tools, technology, and specialized academic programs.
By joining the Education Freedom Tax Program, Florida is expanding parental choice and empowering families to find the education that best meets their children’s needs. Step Up For Students, through the Step Up, Step Further Scholarship Fund, stands ready to partner with taxpayers who want to make a meaningful difference for students statewide.
